For the past ten years, I have been struggling with both rheumatoid and osteo-arthritis. It has changed my life profoundly, but I continue to feel I am the luckiest person in the world. About three years ago, I realized that I could no longer take care of my vast Boulder garden that grew more lush and more flamboyant every year. I gradually gave up parts of the garden, built more decks, stopped planting vegetables (except for tomatoes, of course) and learned how to grow culinary herbs in containers. One day, at my rheumatologist’s office, I said I had given up the garden. He said (being a gardener himself), “How can you do that?”
And I said, “I can make a garden. I’m an artist.”
