Exploring the Surface: An Integrated Approach

2 - 3 Days

This workshop will focus on simple but seemingly complex techniques--painting, free-motion machine embroidery, layering, and applique, and show you how to integrate these techniques with pieced work to create quilts and clothing which can be interesting and powerful.


 

Embroidered Collage: Making Dense Surfaces

2 - 4 Days 

Learn satin-stitch free motion machine embroidery and how it can be useful in your quilts. We will learn how to collage images and over-embroider them. Emphasis will be placed on thread usage, design composition, and finishing techniques.


 

Beyond Crazy: Contemporary Crazy Quilt Technique as Background 

2 - 3 Days 

A crash course in contemporary crazy quilt technique and how to use this technique to achieve landscape and color-wash effects.

This workshop is excellent when taken in conjunction with Exploring the Surface workshop. 



Fabulous Finishes: Getting Your Quilt Ready for Exhibition

1 Day

This is a technical class teaching strategies for binding, finishing, hemming, making sleeves, and presenting your work for exhibition. We will be making samples of different finishes and actually finishing a quilt the student brings.


WORKSHOP FEES FOR GUILD AND GROUPS -- $500 USD per day for up to 15 students plus expenses (lodging, meals, transportation).

Journey without Maps

A 45-minute presentation with 60 images of Judith Trager's journey from painter to art quiltmaker, with stops in between. In this presentation, Judith tells with humor her experiences with the world of cloth and change, and invites the viewer to travel with her. This has been a very popular lecture and has inspired many people--both artists and appreciators.

Pricing Your Work

A 45-minute presentation with images by Judith and various art quilters which discusses the economics of selling and pricing art quilts. This is a particularly helpful lecture for artists who are just beginning to sell their work. This lecture was originally presented at the national Studio Quilt Art Associates meeting in 2007.

Rooted in Tradition: Art Quilts from the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum

A 45-minute lecture designed to compliment the exhibition, "Rooted in Tradition," which is currently traveling to museums throughout the United States. This lecture shows imges of the quilts in the exhibition, information about the artists and their intent, and a compendium of quilt history.

Don't Fence Me In

A 45-minute lecture designed to compliment the traveling exhibition, "Don't Fence Me in." This is a humorous look at the 52 quilts in this exhibition and talks about quilts in the lives of Western women and the importance quilts have had in our society.

America Celebrates   (Available for booking January, 2011)

A 45-minute lecture to accompany the new exhibition, "America Celebrates." This exhibition will begin traveling in January, 2011 with the Smith-Kramer traveling exhibition service. This lecture is perfect for museums showing this exciting new exhibition.


All lectures include an extra 15 - 30 minutes beyond the actual presentation for questions and answers.

LECTURE FEE:  $400 plus all expenses (travel, lodging, meals)
Many institutions and guilds combine lectures with workshops. In such case, a discount can be given.
